St John’s on-the-Hill Preparatory School is a co-educational day and boarding school for children aged 7-13 years.
Set in beautiful surroundings, overlooking Chepstow Castle, St John’s offers superb co-education schooling with very small classes. It has an excellent reputation for academic achievement, with a 100% success record at common entrance as well as a huge number of scholarships to senior schools.
With 185 pupils, the Preparatory School is small enough to allow everyone to know one another and to get fully involved in the life of the School. The School is however large enough to have an extremely strong boarding community, vibrant and exciting creative arts, a remarkable sporting reputation, impressive academic results and a wide spectrum of extra-curricular activities.
St John’s provides children ample opportunity to develop responsibility, independence and leadership skills. Alongside their education, the children are taught to respect themselves and each other, giving them morals and principles that secure St John’s in their hearts for life.
Recently, St John’s joined forces with Dean Close, an outstanding co-educational school in Cheltenham. The amalgamation of the two schools unlocks new investment into St John’s not only through its buildings and fabric of the site, but also in the educational and pastoral opportunities available.
The School has always been about high quality care for its pupils and this will remain the case in the future, sharing the same values and ethos as Dean Close. It has a hugely loyal following, among old pupils, parents and staff, and this isn’t surprising. It is a place where generations of children have grown up and been very well educated; it is respected in the locality for its standards, its sporting success, high quality drama and its links to good senior schools.
The word ‘community’ is often used by schools, but in St John’s case, it has real meaning. Come and visit us and experience first-hand a School full of fun, spirit and life, with a down to earth, talented staff who genuinely want the best for the children, and work hard to achieve it.
