St John’s on-the-Hill pupil Yan-Heng Zhang took first place at the Pangea UK Mathematics Final at Middlesex University, in London, on Saturday the 4th May.
Yan-Heng won the Year 4 category where he competed one year above his chronological age (he is 8 years old). Last year he finished 2nd.
St John’s pupils, Anna Boyle and Ffion Hillman, also qualified for the final.
More than 150 schools took part with more than 10,000 pupils competing overall.
St John’s has had incredible success in maths competitions this year. The introduction of the ‘working walls’ (new whiteboards in maths classrooms) has helped to significantly improve pupils’ team challenge ability.
Earlier this year St John’s Year 6 team reached the semi-finals and the Year 8 team finished runners-up at the Young Mathematicians’ Awards at Cambridge University.
St John’s finished 5th at the regional finals of the UKMT Team Challenge in Leominster.
St John’s held its first Year 6 Maths Challenge this year with seven local primary schools taking part in team challenges in partnership with the UKMT.
