St John’s on-the-Hill School celebrated National Poetry Day with poems from Michael Rosen, Benjamin Zephaniah, Jessie Pope, Daniel Beaty and others. The school also marked the celebration with its inaugural Poetry Recital Competition.

Mr Downie, Head of English, said: “Reciting a poem entails more than simply reading aloud. Pupils had to show evidence of understanding, dramatic appropriateness, articulation and physical presence.

“Congratulations to our winners Robbie Davies and Katie Rayner who both performed their chosen poems beautifully.”
