“At St John’s children are valued and supported to achieve their passions and potential. Every child matters and there is a strong sense of family and community. I would be delighted to welcome you to the school for a tour of our facilities and to meet our wonderful staff and pupils.”
Ruth Frett

Ruth Frett joined St John’s on-the-Hill School as Head, in September 2016, shortly after the school joined forces with Dean Close School, in Cheltenham. Ruth has extensive experience in education, in particular Preparatory Schools.

Ruth was a pupil at Dean Close School before going to St Andrew’s University where she read English and gained her MA. She then moved on to Trinity College of Music, after which she became a professional singer for 10 years, singing on BBC Radio 4 and performing concerts in jazz, German lieder, oratorio and opera all over London and Europe.

After taking a break to have children, Ruth moved into education. In 2008 she was appointed Head of Middle School, Head of RS and Chaplain at Cranleigh Prep School and two years later took on the additional role of Housemistress of a large girls’ boarding house. Ruth taught RS, Classical Civilisation and Drama and has coached netball and rounders teams.

Ruth is married to Dan, an American, who works for a software company, as well as serving as a priest at their local parish church. They have five children with Josh serving in the Scottish Highlanders Regiment; Luke teaching in Cambridge; Noah at York University; Abby at Glasgow University; and Ethan at St John’s.
