LAMDA was founded in 1861 and is the oldest drama school in the United Kingdom. It is also the largest speech and drama award body in the country.

LAMDA teaching at St John’s encompasses a wide range of subjects including acting, verse and prose, public speaking, spoken English and musical theatre.

LAMDA examinations are designed to equip pupils with a range of skills that will serve them through life. Through one-to-one and group tuition, pupils are encouraged to:

  • Unlock their imagination and creative thinking
  • Develop memory and communications skills
  • Build self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Acquire skill certification for career development

St John’s pupils can enter for Graded Examinations in the following subjects:

  • Acting
  • Devised Drama
  • Mime
  • Musical Theatre
  • Verse and Prose
  • Reading for Performance
  • Public Speaking

Some pupils prefer not to take examinations but simply use the sessions to help achieve other goals, such as audition preparation and skill-building in areas such as public speaking or voice work.
